LEAD BELLY
Huddie William Ledbetter aka Lead Belly (January 20/1888 – December
6/1949) was an iconic
American Blues singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Notable for
his strong vocals,
his virtuosity on the 12-string guitar and the songbook of Folk standards
he introduced.
Lead Belly styled himself 'King of the 12-string guitar' despite his use
of other instruments like
the accordion and piano. The most enduring image of LeadBelly is wielding
his large Stella 12-string.
Lead Belly's songbook has been covered by virtually hundreds of artists
from Long John Baldry,
Elvis, CCR, Led Zepplin, Jack White to Frank Sinatra, Odetta and Nick
Cave. Lead Belly was inducted
into into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1986. |
