SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON II
Alex Miller (December 5/1912 – May 25/1945),known professionally as Sonny
Boy Williamson, was an American Blues harmonica player, singer and
songwriter, from Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, Willie Dixon recalled
seeing Miller playing for tips in Greenville, Mississippi in the 1930s. He
entertained audiences with novelties such as inserting one end of the
harmonica into his mouth and playing with no hands. At this time he was
often known as 'Rice' Miller. In 1941 Miller was hired to play the King
Biscuit Time Radio Show, advertising the King Biscuit brand of flour on
station KFFA in Helena, Arkansas. Sonny Boy is acknowledged as one of the
most charismatic and influential Blues musicians, with considerable
prowess on the harmonica and highly creative songwriting skills. He
recorded successfully in the 1950s and 1940s, and had a direct influence
on later Blues and Rock performers.
Sonny Boy Williamson II was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of
Fame in 1980. |
